Language Immersion

With UCEAP Florence, students learn language through culture, and culture through language. In addition to the intensive language courses, diverse interactions with Florentine university students, families, local artists, business owners, non-profit associations, and expert lecturers give a true sense of Italian culture, building language skills and fostering intercultural competence.

Living with a host family is the best way to accelerate your language learning. Florentine host families come in many forms – young couples with children, retired couples, and single people – and are chosen for the passion and dedication that they put into the student experience.

Language Exchanges
Beyond day-to-day interactions like ordering coffee at the bar or visiting the market in Piazza Santo Spirito, UCEAP Florence students have ample opportunity for language practice. Regular group language exchanges with students from the Università di Firenze are organized at the Study Center and the local university. Many students establish one-on-one language exchanges with local students, meeting regularly to practice Italian and developing a Florentine social circle in the process.

Each term the Study Center has an intern from the Università di Firenze who hosts weekly lunchtime conversation groups open to all students.

Intensive Italian Classes
Italian classes are communication-based and incorporate a number of activities to facilitate the use of written and spoken Italian, both in and outside of the classroom. Classes often use the streets of Florence as a classroom, interacting with market vendors, visiting artisan workshops, exploring museums and gardens, and host conversation with Italian university students and members of a neighborhood senior citizen association.
